BROTHERS KARAMAZOV CONSTANCE GARNETT TRANSLATION PDF

Continue Reading Loading… I have not personally looked at all the translations of the Brothers Karamazov. However, I have looked at some translations and have read about others from people I respect, so you can take my opinion with a grain a salt whose size is of your choosing. The first one is by Constance Garnett. Garnett left a great gift to the world by introducing practically all of the Russian classics to the English speaking world. But her style is more suited for writers like Pushkin, Chekhov, or Tolstoy. In grad school, in a class on translation, we looked very closely at several translations of a handful of authors, including, of course, Dostoevsky.

She cleaned up places where the sentence structure was awkward in the original, a no-no in translation. In addition, she used different words to translate the same word in Russian, something clearly deliberately done by Dostoevsky. Her translation was unsuitable and sometimes just plain wrong and made a rather different impression than the original. So please stay away from Garnett. Another translation to stay away from is the acclaimed Pevear and Volokhonsky translation.

Right off the bat, with the translation of the title, The Karamazov Brothers, Avsey shows himself to be a translator who is able to ignore conventions and who has a deep knowledge of Russian. And his explanation for translating the title that way is solid and persuasive.

The entire translation is finely crafted and carefully done and does a good job conveying the tone, emotional quality, and mood of the original.

The Translation Wars

Save Story Save this story for later. Constance Garnett. Translators suffer a thankless and uneasy afterlife. Translators are, for eternity, sent up, put down, nitpicked, and, finally, overturned.
